Detent Hinge Design
Application-specific hinge engineering for indexed-position requirements, including predetermined hold angles, motion feel, geometry constraints, material selection, and OEM target cost alignment.
Explore how detent hinges create indexed motion, hold panels at predetermined angles, and improve the user experience in OEM products. Mansfield Engineered Components helps design, prototype, validate, and manufacture custom detent hinge solutions for appliance, automotive aftermarket, medical casegoods, and industrial applications where standard catalog hardware cannot meet fit, feel, function, or cost targets.

Custom engineering, validation, manufacturing, and production support for OEM detent hinge programs.
Application-specific hinge engineering for indexed-position requirements, including predetermined hold angles, motion feel, geometry constraints, material selection, and OEM target cost alignment.
Manufacturing support for concealed, pivot, continuous, four-bar, detent, friction, and specialty position-control hinges built to OEM specifications instead of catalog limitations.
In-house prototyping and engineering validation to confirm motion arc, tactile feel, cycle life, hold-at-angle performance, and production readiness before tooling is released.
Custom motion control development for hinges, counterbalances, and closure mechanisms requiring specific torque behavior, indexed stops, controlled movement, or user-defined operating feel.
Progressive die stamping, single-stage stamping, sheet metal fabrication, spring manufacturing, assembly, and inspection for high-quality detent hinge component production.
End-to-end program ownership from design and prototyping through tooling, production, inspection, packaging, and release-based delivery against OEM schedules.

Mansfield begins by reviewing the product geometry, panel weight, motion arc, desired detent angles, tactile feel, environmental exposure, production volume, and target unit economics that shape the hinge design.
OEM teams rely on Mansfield for custom hinge engineering, manufacturing depth, and dependable program execution.
Founded in 1939, Mansfield brings decades of hinge and motion control experience.
Every component is designed to application requirements, not forced from a standard catalog.
Mansfield ships over 250,000 motion control components every week for OEM programs.
Design, prototyping, tooling, stamping, assembly, inspection, and delivery are managed together.
Experienced leaders guiding custom hinge programs from concept to production.
A detent hinge uses a mechanical indexing feature to create defined stopping points along the hinge’s rotation. As the hinge moves, internal geometry or spring-loaded features engage at predetermined angles, creating a tactile “click” or hold position. This lets a door, lid, panel, or cover stay open or partially open at specific positions instead of swinging freely.
